So, it is not just us.

According to Yahoo, Las Vegas received record snowfall today.

One has to wonder.

I found this link that covers some basic DIY of checking out a used Car

Updates:

On my Lost Arts Project, I have decided my first endeavor will be to make a paper towel roll flashlight. I know that sound incredibly lame; however, it is so I can get a good hold on how electricity works and maybe work up to solar panels and such eventually. I already understand the basics of closing the circuit and such, but could not hurt to build up from fundamentals.
Also, my friend going to make Renaissance clothing for when we go next year to the Renaissance festival. So, I will get to see how to make clothing from fabric, which I do not know how.

Only in Texas

Well, it has to be said. Only in Texas can it snow one day, and have 60 near 70 degree the day after. (More like a day and half after.)

I really have not had much to say. I am working on several projects. One of which is learning calculus. I took pre-calculus in high school, and college level business math in college, but that is as far as I got. I know most who are reading this will have a "are you crazy?" reaction, but I am good at math. I really enjoy working with numbers, and perhaps now I will understand it even better than I did in high school or college.

My Lost Arts Project is going slowly, due to work and life. I will update you all on it when I have a chance.

One link I would like to share today: TOP 5 Financial Meltdown Scams
I do like the picture in the article. It says: THE MARKET IS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. Any truth to that? What do you all think?

Stay safe, as always.

It is about as good we get.

But today around 4 Pm there were reports of snow falling already.

In some places it is very white, but in other places it is barely sticking.

But it so beautiful.

Something Useful

I saw this article on Yahoo Finance:

http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/106255/In-Lean-Times,-Online-Coupons-Catching-On

It talks about a lot of coupon codes from many different sources for all the products we frequently buy online and elsewhere.

Stay safe and well.

The Thing I Do Not Say

When I write, I like to leave my personal life out of it.
I may make a slight reference here and there, but I believe that your personal life has very little relevance on the internet, unless it is part of the topic at hand.

Despite the previous statement, I cannot help but feel saddened by the fact that my sweetie is worried about our future. I wish to tell my sweetie that we will make it in every way that sentence can mean.

I think that is what I wish to impart upon the world the today. Do not put off your future plans for marriage, children, careers, or what not. I do not mean if you goal to be an actor/ actresses. I mean daily survival.

If you intend to make it with all your might. If you intend to truly survive, and I mean truly, truly survive. No matter how hard it is, then you will be fine. It make a lot of work, and a lot of suffering, but if our grandparents could make through great depression, and our long time ago ancestors could make it through the dark ages. Why can't we?

I do not bring religion into my writing very often, I find people will not listen to me when I do. But in today's breaking of my many habits, I wish to say that God will take care of those who are truly faithful to him. So I do not fear anything that comes my way.

Midwifery

I was talking to a good friend of mine who is thinking about becoming a midwife. She is a good, compassionate person who would be perfect as a midwife. I took some time to look up midwifery, and was stunned to find all the regulations and controversies about it. Up till recent times, that was the way women gave birth, but now it is viewed as weird, but it is making a bit of comeback.

I am not sure what to think of this. I remember in secondary school in my health class we had to watch the "miracle of life" movie. It made me cringe, but to understand it was enlightening. I do not know if I could ever really watch someone give birth, let along assist in the process, but I figure life is interesting; so I shall not say never about anything that could happen.

Take care, stay safe and be well.

Gattaca

On Hulu.com, they are doing a special event called Movies for the Holidays.
Currently, they have the movie Gattaca in its full length. (You all should watch it. It is a good movie!)

This movie scared me a bit, because I know it is pretty much all possible already.

On the side note the word Gattaca comes from the first letters of the hydrogen bonds of DNA.(GATC) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dna

After seeing the movie last night, I came upon this article today in which a school is testing the children via genetics to see which child would be the best for what sports. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/30/sports/30genetics.html?no_interstitial It seemed like Deja Vu to me.

What do you all think? Is this a way we want to go?

Say Only What You Must

I know I do not update this blog as often as many others update theirs, but there is reason for this. I simply do not always have something to say. I figure saying what is important when it is needed is far more valuable than just always talking. I am thankful for my frequent visitors who leave comments once a in a while or votes on my polls. I hope you all like what I write, and if there is any topics you would like me sound off about, do not hesitate to let me know.

So, in the spirit of this post, I wish to let everyone know my Lost Arts project is going well. I am working on doing gummy bears and candles right now. I found out a good friend of mine knows how to make candles, so when we both have time, we will be attempting that. Also, if conditions permit, we will try to see which types of candles last the longest, which makes the least amount of mess, and any other variables that come along.

The one piece of wisdom I would like to impart to you all out there is that ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. Meaning what you do will always say more about who you are than anything you can ever say.

I do wish everyone Happy Thanksgiving (aka Happy Turkey Day.) Be thankful for what you have. We all very lucky to have what we have, when so many are without.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Lost Arts

We are so dependent upon people making things for us. I know it is because of the economic principle of how much our time is worth, and it is not worth our time to grow and or kill our own food, and process it. Also it is not worth our time to make candy, toys, butter, candles, or even sew our own clothing. However, if these services for some reason were not available, most people would not know what to do.

So along with my urge to stock, as mentioned previously, I have decided to embark on the lost arts. I want to make a book out of what I try and what I fail at. I know there are many resources both via the internet, and via books that are available, which I intend to use; however, there is nothing like experimenting and understanding first hand how different things react. (I already understand what not to put together thanks to high school chemistry, so do not worry, I shall not cause too much harm to myself.)

I found this one blog that maybe of assistance to me, and to anyone else who wishes to embark on the lost arts. The Lost Arts.

Also, I am proud to announce I have acquired a telescope. It is not a big one, but it was inexpensive, and of decent quality. I was going to build one, but I have not had a chance, nor the money to do so. I am a bit of an astronomy buff.. unfortunately, I only really know the basics, but in theme of lost arts, I want to keep learning. about the night sky (and day sky). I know already that you can tell time, direction, and if you are good enough, even tell what day it is, with astronomy. I have posted before about using the sky to tell direction, if anyone wants to read it.

Take care and be well. If anyone else is embarking the lost arts, let me know about your trials and errors.

Junk Mail and the Mailman

Well I saw an article today about people trying to figure out why Postal Workers hoard mail. I do not think they have solved the mystery quiet yet; however, I do not entirely mind when I don't get ten thousand pieces of the same junk mail...so I can not really make an opinion on this matter.

Cellular Phone

I don't have much to say today. Just my usual. Watch the news. Pay attention around you. I thought this article was kind of cute. I had not thought about PDAs and such in a long time, but I remember them.

The Good Olde Days

The best places to raise your kids.

In the article, they mention a town called Mount Prospect. This the way things are suppose to be. This is the way it use to be. People should strive to be financially independent, but still care about the people around them. This is the type of place I would want to raise my kids in and live in.

Driving through clouds

After all that is been going on, it is nice to see even nature is trying to be back on schedule. The true cold front winds are passing through. On Thursday, I drove through some fog on my way to work. The denser parts of the fog had already risen to about the eighth floor on buildings. It was really beautiful. I did not have my camera with me, otherwise I would show everyone.

My thoughts have been on storing. I know I mentioned this the other day. I have also thought about transport for my storing, if I was to flee. Car would be no good if there was any type of EMP disturbance or simply if I have no gas. So the choices are either an old (1970's and before) car which runs on near to no electronic devices, or something self propelled (eg: a bike.) However, if I was fleeing, a bike would not be the best choice because there is cover, so it would be relatively unsafe.

I know my ranting thoughts seem a little tin foilish, but bear with me. I believe preparing. If I had not, Ike would of been far worse for me. If events like Ike can happen, which most people did not see coming, what is to say other things can not. They are quite plausible, otherwise the government would not do the drills they do, or promote preparation as they do.

I would like to mention I am not so wrapped in preparing that I do not live. I can not understand those who get so wrapped in what they do, may it be video games, preparing, religion, work, or what ever else is their thing. Do not forget to live. You need to prepare, but preparing is about survival and living, so what is the point if you don't live? When I say live, I do not mean breaking laws or hurting people. I simply mean enjoy the people around you. Be cognitive of what is going on around you.

A side note: I did mention religion. I mentioned religion, because I know people who do nothing but go to church. Now, I have no quarrels about church. It is a good thing. But, if you spend all your time at church, then are you doing what you are learned at church?

You all take care of yourselves. Like I have said before pay attention to the news. Read multiple sources, and if you can read the news in different languages. The way another country reports about something happening here can be quite different than the news we are receiving. A good source for news is http://www.drudgereport.com/ It sums up all the news in one place. I find it to be more honest then a lot of major news networks.

The little things I learned today

1."John Podesta said the president can use such orders to move quickly without waiting for Congress to act, highlighting the extraordinary powers a president can wield beyond signing legislation approved by Congress. Podesta said people should expect Obama to use those powers to reverse many policies of the Bush administration."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081109/ap_on_el_pr/obama

2. How Ex-Presidents/ Ex Prime Ministers make their money.

3. The unhappy ending to fairly tales. (Some of these are somewhat twisted. Read at your own caution.)

4. Louisiana Jindal for President in 2012

Didn't we just finish the last election, finally? It only took two and half years.

Meat ya

Needless to say, I am an meat eater.
Don't hate me for it.
I don't agree with hurting little animals, but doesn't mean I should deprive myself of meat.
As I like to say, I have pointy teeth and flat teeth for a reason. It means I should eat both meat and vegetables.

I found two really awesome meat related sites.
The first is a site that sells meat, but that is raised on a farm and everything, so it should taste real good.
The second site it a blog about meat. Check it out!

Laptop Care

For many of us, our laptops are our lives.. and a major investment.
So, just like your car, you should take care of your laptop.

Even though where I live it does not even reach freezing most of the time, I was curious what the cold could do to a laptop.

The following links are just ones about taking care of your laptop in the cold, but the last one is a fun link from a company that makes electronics to withstand the extreme cold.

Enjoy!

Saving Messages and Memories

I was looking for a way to save my cell phone messages. Unlike a regular voicemail machine in which you can save your messages by not deleting it or on the old machines, you would just take out the tape.

Something Isn't Right

Basic economic principles are not being followed.
The gas prices are falling, yet the food prices have not.
The two are correlated.

The gas prices are falling, but why are they?
There is nothing going on that would make them fall.
There is the same amount of demand. Gas, like milk is inelastic demand item. Meaning, it is like milk. People will buy milk, no matter how much it is, because they need it. So the price variation does not make sense. In Fact with Ike coming and going, it should cause the price to increase, versus decrease. The economists even said that would happen.

Something isn't right. I will leave it at that.

My dorms never looked like this

http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1838306_1759869,00.html

This is an interesting video essay on how dorms have changed over time.
Needless to say the dorms I live in college never looked like these, but it is quite interesting to see how things have changed.

There was an article on Yahoo about how the DOW has jumped 500 points.
We can only see if this trend continues, or what. The problem with the economy is not so much there is something wrong with it, but the fact people lack the confidence to spend money, because they fear they will not have a job to make the money to spend later on.

We have heard a lot recently about Wachovia, Indy Mac, Wamu, and so forth Banks not doing well, and watching the goverment try to save them.

Well it is not just us that suffering, but also the European Nations.

Post Ike

The power came back on either Wednesday or Thursday.

Still recovering and will have to write more about this later.

Needless to say I was very fortunate.

I had a gas stove that could be lit with a spark light to cook hot meals.
The landline allowed for communication and limited use of the internet.

One thing I would like to mention before I forget: Food keeps morale up.

Sunday, September 14, 2008

Well the power is still out. But that is the worst of my problems. The power went out a few moments after my previous post.

I have been on survival mode.

You never realize how much you depend on power till you do have it.
I have been fortunate. My folks have a generator.
So have been able to keep our refrigerator alive along with keeping a bit cooler and our survival lighting charged. Also, we have running water.

I am able to get in contact with people, because the landlines still work, moreover it how I am able to be here at the moment. I am only able to use the phone, because we have an old school style phone.

The grocery stores opened in my area despite many homes still without power, and I was able to get some ice today.

I shall keep this short, for this ordeal is very physically and mentally draining.

I have to give my ancestors dibs. They had to do this every day.

Here Comes the Rain

The rain is here.
It is a catagory two, almost a three.
It is weakening.

No, it is not Alica.

The power is starting to go out everywhere.
Do not know how long I will be here.

The wind is starting to gust toward 50 mph.

It is suppose to start getting bad toward midnight.

Sunset on Ike

Sunset before the storm. (about 7:37PM)

This is facing North.

Will try to continue to update as long I have power.

Love the fact I can use my survival know how.

Stay Safe!!!

Salutations Ike

Spent most of the day prepping for Ike. Mostly cleaning, cooking, and orgainizing supplies.

Yesterday it was a madhouse at the stores and the gas stations.
Both were empty and people were fighting for supplies.
Fortunatly enough I got some gas during my lunch break, and thanks to Gustav food prepartions had already been done.

Currently Galveston is already starting to flood and some of their electricity is already starting to go. It is quiet outside. It is very eerie.

The wind currently is blowing at about 30+ something miles and starting to pick up. You can see some debris really start to fly.

It has been drizzling on and off since 2pm.

Now Is The Time

Now is the time to start charging everything- cell phones, laptops, batteries, lamps, etc.

Now is the time to have your water, your food, to protect your family and property.

I am bunkering with my folks.
It is so weird to see our house all boarded up.
I want to write something original on the boards.
Or maybe i will just write "Take a Hike, IKE"

I have started video logging the events going on around me.

It was ominmous for a few minutes but now is so calm, blue sky and beautiful sunset outside right now. It is a bit creepy when you know what is coming your way.

For the worst

How to Survive Anything Mother Nature Throws at You

It explains itself.

IKE

Well I am here waiting for Ike.
I will be bunkering down and get a chance to use the survival skills and things I have been prepping.

This was a bit hard to find, however I found it.
It is the evacuation zones map for Houston.
I assume this is just for Ike.

I am a bit scared, but I am not panicking.
This is what I want to tell people.
DO NOT Panic. It is bad to. Take a deep breathe and make a decision on what you need to do.

Also, six inches of water can move a person, a foot of water can start moving a car.

I will update more as I do more and as long as the power stays on.

Birthdays and Ike

Some Birthday Trivia for you all:

Yesterday was Michelle Williams', Otis Redding's and Rachel Hunter's birthdays.

Otis Redding died when he was 26 and before he ever knew he was such a bit hit. Some of the songs we know by him are "Under the Broadwalk", and "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay"

A Little Bit of Everything.

I am so proud of Sarah Palin. Many people make the mistake that feminism is about woman dominate power.but it is not. Woman and men are meant to be complementary. It about good strong women who can kick butt, and actually bring good to this world like I have mentioned before. http://ontologicalthinker.blogspot.com/2008/06/feminism.html

She spoke very well, and really did a good job at yesterday's Republican National Committee. Congratulations, Sarah!

I am pleased to announce that when I walked outside today for work, I was met with a cool breeze. This means Autumn is coming. With cooler weather coming, we will want to stay warm. It is easy to crank up the heater, but that is friendly to your pocketbook. Instead use blankets, sweaters, and insulating your house properly, this way you do not have to turn the heater on so high.

This will be a interesting election, needless to say.

Take care, watch out for Hanna and Ike, and keep an eye on the news.

Google Chrome

Google is trying to come out with a new browser. Check it out for yourself.

I don't like this.

I am not a comcast user, but I know a lot of people that are. Supposedly they are going to set limits on how much you can use on broadband.

It is good for you.

I have been thinking about starting a exercise routine.
I know it is good for me.
Also, once you get in the routine, then it is easier to stick to it.

I found this neat article with tips on ehow.com for doing this.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2054054_stick-workout-program.html

Exercise just makes you feel better.
When you exercise it releases a hormone that makes you happy, and for each pound you loose, you take four pounds of your knees.

Take care and stay well!

How to do anything

I found this really neat site that has basic steps on how to do most things.

Enjoy!

Dare to Prepare v.2

I have been working on my get home pack. I feel it is needed.. even if there is not a natural disaster or anything.. sometimes you just get stranded.
A lot of this is new to me.. so I am just discovering what is important or what is better to use and easier to carry.
I have several items already, (like a compass, some food, water, and some other things)but it is no where near done.
I have measured that I would have to travel between 18-20 miles depending on where I am at during the day.

Currently I keep in my car the following basic items:
First Aid Kit (FAK)
Several Bottles of water.
Socks
Tennis/ Walking shoes
Crackers (I switch them out on a monthly basis)
Along with what I call a FAK for my car- jumper cables, flat fix, and some other items.

I want to get a tool kit and a space blanket for my car.

Most people do not realize that if for some reason you are trapped in your car after dark, it can get cold very fast and it is quite possible to get hypothermia. So a blanket can be a life safer.

As I have posted previously, there are ways to find your way home without a compass.. by using the stars and the sun. If you don't know how to do that.. it is a really good thing to learn. http://ontologicalthinker.blogspot.com/2008/05/no-compass-no-problem.html

Dare to Prepare

I found this really good preparation video.
It is a little religious, but it is pretty throughral and worth watching.
It may not work in Firefox if you do not have the IE tab feature installed, so you may have to use Internet Explorer, you can choose to download it if you want.
You may have to refresh the page to get it to work. It is a little temperamental.

Enjoy and watch out for Gustav.

Daily Trivia

Did you know?

Fourscore means 80?
A Forthright means 14 days?

An Armoire in French is still an Armoire in English- there is no translation

In French the word "travailler" does not mean travel, instead it means work.

A Quadragenarian is someone who is 40-49 years old.

Normal is defined as:
conforming with or constituting a norm or standard or level or type or social norm; not abnormal; "serve wine at normal room temperature"; "normal diplomatic relations"; "normal working hours"; "normal word order"; "normal curiosity"; "the normal course o

Computers

I have been looking for a new laptop.
I understand most of the specs, however, it still can make your head spin.
I have include below some tips and terminlogy that may make your laptop and desktop buying easier.

This site not only has computer terminlogy, but also other electronic terminlogy.
http://www.laptopbroker.com/glossary/index.cfm

PC Magazine is a good source to keep on top of new technology.
One of the best things they do is rate software and electronics.
This article is slightly outdated, but still gives some good tips on computer buying.

"House OKs rescue for homeowners, Freddie, Fannie"

Today the house passed a bill to bail out Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae with their struggling mortgages with a 272 to 152 vote. They said that

"The bill would let the Federal Housing Administration back $300 billion in new loans so an estimated 400,000 homeowners who cannot afford their house payments could try to escape foreclosure by refinancing into safer, more affordable mortgages. Lenders would have to agree to take a substantial loss on the existing loans, and in return, they would walk away with at least some payoff and avoid the often-costly foreclosure process."

No one bothers to mention that financial companies need to stop lending to everyone they meet. It is not a smart business decision. This why there are problems right now. If someone is 100k+ in debt, they probably should not get more loans or more credit cards. However, they don't bother to cut them off. I know Freddie and Fannie are mortgages companies. But same idea applies. No second mortgages. No extra loans

I am not sure how long the link will last. However, I know this issue is not going away that easily.

More planets? Didn't they say pluto wasn't one?

For all you astronomy lovers out there, The International Astronomical Union (IAU) discovered another planet. They have dubbed it, Makemake.

Fourth Dwarf Planet Named For Polynesian God

Also, on August 12, 2008 there will be the Perseids meteor shower (aka shooting stars.) It will be a beautiful site. (It can be used for a romantic outing.) (Binoculars are good for star viewing if you do not have telescope, but meteor showers can be seen without either.)

Be Aware

Needless to say, it is Hurricane Season. For anyone who doesn't live in Hurricane areas it is just as scary as tornadoes, blizzards, and any other type of disaster.

This post serves two purposes.

First, to emphasize paying attention to the news. May it be weather related (such as hurricanes, tornado, etc.), or just general news. (Such as Indymac, Fannie Mae, and so forth.) By paying attention, you are preparing yourself for the unfortunate. Anyone with the tiniest reasoning skills can foresee trouble. Do not forget the local news. It worth your time and effort. Those are the events that rule your daily life. Such as I would not have known the change in the amount one can sue for in the small claims court.

Second, organize all your important documents into one place, and put in a unlocked tote like container. (It needs to be easy to carry) I was told before that it is okay to have a lock on it, but you don't really want to lock it, because if you are ever robbed, you do not wish for the robbers to take the box. If it is left unlocked, they can open it and see that there is no money or jewels in it. Also, it is wise to have a certain amount of cash stashed away, because in a crisis, it is quite likely plastic (credit/debit cards) can not be used.

Remember, we are a paper (document) dependent world. (Our assets and ownership is tied into who we are, and if you don't have what you need to prove it, then it can be difficult to get what you need and what belongs to you.

The following picture is the current hurricane conditions. It is something I watch very closely. I got it from the National Hurricane Center. (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/)

Take care, be safe, and stay aware.

What to Watch Out When Job Hunting

Job hunting is a difficult task. I do not think anyone would disagree.
In this time and era, it is futhermore complicated by people who want to scam you.
I can not say exactly what to watch out for. Just like with all other types of scams, you have to use common sense.
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I have included some sites that may aid your search.
Needless to say, it does not cover all things out there.

http://www.419legal.org/
http://www.ripoffreport.com/

One tip is try to stay with reputable companies and school (university) job listings.
Another tip is google the company or the person sending you a job offer.

Craigslist is a good source for local job posting, but remember anyone can put something up. Be careful of scam posting. (Craigslist also warns of scammers. Do take time to read what they say.)

Good luck to you all.

No Tax Break for Ball State University

According to Ball State online, the IRS has given Ball State University a limit on cell phone, and PDAs.

"The IRS just gave Ball State University an excuse to limit the use of university-owned cell phones and PDAs. According to the Internal Revenue Service's Taxable Fringe Benefit Guide, cell phones and PDAs are now 'listed items,' which means the university can't claim them for tax purposes."

Hurricane Tracker

For those who live in hurricane/ typhoon areas, hurricane season is a big deal.
Everyone emphasises on being prepared for hurricane type weather.
It can show up very fast, like Katrina.

One of the best sites to track hurricane weather (both Atlantic and Pacific related) is the National Hurricane Center website.
They have all types of maps and charts that are easy to understand. Also, they have hurricane background information, and the lists of hurricane names used, to be, and retired.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml

Stay safe and be well.

Saving is Good.

As everyone tightens its belt to save money here are some easy ways without giving up much to do so.

The first two links are the same article, because I know yahoo links to sometimes expire.
The article talks about how to increase gas mileage, which we all know is good.
They mention combining errands, avoiding left turns, and a bunch of other tips.

Feminism

I know guys cringe when they hear this word, and to a certain degree they deserve to.
I truly believe it has gotten out of hand.
Feminism was about creating strong women like Queen Elizabeth, or Queen Victoria or even Margret Thatcher, so they could bring good things to their families and the world.
I know feminism was also about equality. Not that I am again equality.
But a lot of women view feminism as domination instead of understand that men and women are suppose to compliment, not dominate, each other.

I know i would not have the choices i do today, if it wasn't for the people that fought of it; however it should not be like this.
But it was not mean to destroy the values of life.
It wasn't about all the things it has turned to today.

A Glorious Day!

Today the decision of Columbia v. Heller was decided.
It was a 5-4 Decision in favor of Heller.
The decision was about the consitutionalism of the second amendment.
I do not think can write it better than the person on Wikipedia did, so go read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia_v._Heller

On a side note, I do have a minor rant.
It is disturbing how we live in time where information is so available, but people do not value knowledge as they use to. It use to be encouraged to be as educated as possible, but now people who are intelligent, are mocked. Why? We would not even have the Internet if it was not for intelligent people.

Getting Home

As part of my routine, I commute almost daily.
One of my concerns is what if something happens.
I have been in a semi-major car accident once.
So, I have had the experience of the "what if" come true.

I do believe in being prepared, however preparedness should not consume you.
Otherwise you don't live.
Like all things, it must be in moderation.

With that in mind, I have made a first aid for my car. (For flats, jumper cables, etc..)
A first aid kit in my car for me or anyone that needs it.
Now I am working on a get home bag.

My reasoning for this if for some reason I can not use my car, I do wish to be able to get home. What is even more important, is I get home safely. There is no point in trying to go home, if you can do it safely.

I have a lot considerations to keep in mind.
Particularly the Sun. If I have to get home, I need make sure the Sun does not fry me. This goes beyond just summertime, because of where I live.
I guess that is something I wish to pass on. Depending on where you live, or what season it is, one must still keep in mind the weather. Do not let your self be caught in bad weather without proper gear. (Raincoat/ponchos, and so forth.)

Also, even in the summer, it is good to have a blanket in your car. When the sun sets, it can get cold, especially if you get wet.

Take care and be well.

Paranoia?

The word "Paranoia" is always used in such a negative connotation, however it keeps people prepared.
I do not deny that some people are truly too paranoid, however a small amount is good.

There is an old saying "Better safe than sorry."
Even governments promote the safe than sorry attitude.
When governments spend the time and money to do something, then it is pretty clear that is a big enough issue to do so.

It is worth you effort to prepare for natural disasters, economic distubances and the imfamous zombies. I had a chance to add to my preparation things today, which made me happy.

Take care and be well.

A little Wisdom

A little introspective insight.

Wisdom is better than Knowledge.
Emotionally Strength is better than Physical Strength.
Real Friends are better than Fake Friends.
Listening is better than just Hearing.
Seeing is better than just looking.

These are the things that matter.

Searching the Net

I found some useful sites online.

I believe in taking care of your health.
It is important to know what you eat.
This site is very important, and tell you how to save money and eat healthy. Additionally, it shows nutrition facts for the food you eat. (With some really nice charts)
By being healthy you save a lot of money in the long run.
http://www.nutritiondata.com/

The other site I found is an extension of Imdb.
I promoted Imdb (International movie database) before.
It is pretty much a tv guide.
http://www.imdb.com/sections/tv/

Not much else on my end.
You all take care.

My Rant

I usually do not rant; however, I have been so angry lately.
I am sick of wussies.
I am sick of all the stupid rules.
Cookie monster eats celery.
Children can not play dodge ball or legos.
In California, people paint their guns pink, so the guns will not be “evil black things”

I am sick of people who do not know who to drive. They go 50 miles an hour in a 65 zone.
When I was driving today, I had a guy cut in front of me. There was no more than 6 feet between the car in front of and my car. Then he ran the red light when we got off the freeway. The people in the car just looked at me, with the attitude of “so what?”

Moreover, I am sick of rapists and all those people who do horrible things and destroy lives.
I am sick of the people who think that the death penalty by injection is painful, because the needle stings a little. (I am not taking a position on being pro-life or not) I just think people just cry over the littlest of things.

This is not the world I want my child to grow up in. I do not want bubble wrap on everything. I do not wish for my child to be protected so much they do not scrap their knees on occasion.

Without some pain, how can one understand true happiness? The world is so caught up on be happy, but sugar coating everything does not allow anyone to be happy.

I wish everyone well. Take care of the ones you love.

Secure Digital Chips (SD Chips)

SD chips are commonly used in our technological devices. They are smaller, more versatile, and sometimes even can hold more memory than flash drives.

It was brought to my attention the other day that SD actually stands for secure digital. Which led me to question, does secure digital mean it is secure and encrypted?
As I search for the answer to this question I can upon several useful and informative links.

How SD chips came about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card

Additionally, I came upon an EBay link in which informs consumers how to avoid counterfeit SD chips.

http://reviews.ebay.com/FAKE-SanDisk-Ultra-Secure-Digital-Cards-Exposed_W0QQugidZ10000000001254879

I hope this information is useful. If anyone can answer my question about how secure SD chips are, let me know.

Passport Chips and Security

Having chips in our passports is news to me.

Which searching on google, I came upon this article which perturbed me.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel/chi-page_3_story_pmdec23,0,1266044.story

It talks about how they are locking down on security for passport chips, which means theft of passport information was a prominent issue.
That disturbs me.

You all can read it and see what you all think.

Take care and be well.

Preparation

"It is better to be safe than sorry"

Preparation is key.
The government promotes even promotes it.
We know they typically don't promote anything unless they are really serious about it.

Here are some sites that may interest you:

Homeland security preparation site:
http://www.ready.gov/

Preparation for Texans site:
http://www.texasprepares.org/ReadyOrNot/Client/Home.aspx

Homeland security site for Texas. ( I could not believe this exists.)
http://www.texashomelandsecurity.com/

I feel even though this is a Texas site, it is useful (obviously apply to where appropriate.)
http://www.readysouthtexas.gov/kit.asp

It is important to know who has the authority to call for emergency procedures in your area. One big problem with Rita and Texas was the confusion of who could call evacuation plans.

Preparation is not for just one geographic area. It is for everyone. Even if it seems like nothing will happen, look at history. It is a matter of time. Do not take lack of events as a reason to prepare.

Best wishes and stay well.

The Compass

I wanted to write about how to use compasses and how to buy them, however, since I lack the knowledge I found this:

http://www.learn-orienteering.org/old/

A compass is important. It is a basic tool like a knife.

Just as with knifes and other tools, it is perinet to pick a compass that works well, otherwise is like using a dull knife, which is more dangerous than a good knife.

Take care and be well.

Thursday, May 22, 2008

No compass? No problem.

As I have metioned before, as well progress with GPS and other forms of technology, we forget basic skills our societies have struggled to learn.

Navigation is one such skill.
There was a time where there were no compasses and such; however, the world knew how not to get lost.
They also knew the world was round, but I am not getting into that today. (If you care, comment.)

I personally think this information is good for either the survivalist, or anyone seeking common knowledge.

1. The sun rises in the east, and sets in the west.
(Duh, right?) Well there is more to it.
The sun will rise North of East and set North of West between the Spring Equinox (About March 20th) and the Autumnal Equinox. (about September 21st)

The equinoxes are the two days in the year when the hours of daylight equals hours of night.
During the equinoxes the sun rises and sets due East and due West, respectively.

Between the Autumnal and Spring Equinoxes, the sun will rise and set South of East and South of West.

On the Summer Solstice (about June 20th) the sun will rise and set at the most north.
On the Winter Solstice (about December 20th), the sun will set the most South.

2. To find north (this only works in the Northern Hemisphere) find the North Star. (The north star does not set or rise, therefore it does not go into the Southern Hemisphere. )

Look for a Big Dipper in the sky. Connect the stars on the right hand side of the dipper, going up and you will run into the North Star, which is also known as Polaris.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dipper

Polaris will match about what latitude you are on the Northern Hemisphere, because of the tilt of the earth. You can measure degrees by standing up, holding out your fist and matching it to the horizon (basically the ground) and count how many fists till the top your fist matches Polaris. Each fist equals about 5 degrees.

There is really no Star like Polaris for the Southern Hemisphere, therefore it is harder to explain using stars for direction.

Also, for a side note, the constellation Orion, the Moon, and the Sun can be used to tell time, but I am not going into that right now.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there.

Some intersting trivia about mothers and Mother's Day.

Dental Plans Versus Dentals Insurance

I should not have to disclaimer myself, but I do not wish anyone to take my opinions and use it against me.

**disclaimer: I am not endorsing or advertising any companies I mention below; therefore can not be held liable for anything. Also, I am basing my opinions upon my own research and can not be held liable for inaccuracy. I do suggest everyone to do their own research. **

This is only about dental plans and dental insurance.
Just to mention, I am not as familiar with other types of medical needs.

I do believe dental plans are better than dental insurance.

Dental plans are basically a discount plan.
They work like your local grocery store cards. (E.g. Kroger’s, Randall’s)
Just like other discount plans, they hope by getting you to join a discount plan will increase your use of a dentist. They have a list of providers that are under the plan at which you will be able to get a discount from.
They emphasis on preventive care. Such as going to the dentist and having your teeth clean on a regular basis, and give you more discounts towards preventive care.
By taking of your teeth early on keep from more expensive problems from forming.
Dental Plan do not dismiss you based on pre-existing conditions which is plus for some people.

However, they do charge a fee in order for you to get a discount.
In addition, you are limited to a list of doctors, but the way to get around that is to pick a plan that includes a more doctors. Also, typically one is locked for the first year, but has the option being month to month afterwards.

Depending on your insurance, it will cover most expenses. However, the problem becomes where your expense become greater than what allowed in the insurance regulations. Say if you insurance only allows two dentist visits, but you have to have a third, because a tooth chipped. It will come out of pocket, and the insurance may overcharge you. There are limitations on what you may have done and who you have to see. With a dental plan, there are not limitations on how much work you can have done. Also, many insurance plans will deny you from benefits if you have a pre-exisiting problems.

My personal opinion is if you have dental insurance as a benefit at work, use it. Your teeth are important, and if you neglect them, problems will become worse. I do think if you have dental insurance then use it would be wise to use it along with a dental plan. That way you are not limited on taking care of the only set of teeth you will ever have. (not counting baby teeth)
By taking care of your teeth will save you money in the run, and you will be able to keep you teeth.

If you do not have a dental insurance, think about getting a dental plan.
I have included some of my favorite plans below.

The first plan is a dental and optical plan. This is good if you constantly need optical care.
http://www.americandentalcareinc.com/

This is dental only.

Remember to take care of yourself.

Mortages

At one point or another, just about everyone will live in a house.
Unless you plan to buy your house with cash, you will have to look at getting a mortage.

I found this article on the basics of mortages.
Hope it is helpful for anyone that needs it.

Sidenote:
Yahoo is not very good about keeping their links alive, so I am not sure if this link will always work.

Eeny Miney Mo, McCain

I had a discussion recently on whom will McCain pick as his running mate.

There are rumors on several people.

It is likely to be either, Condoleezza, Romeny, or Huckabee.

Condoleezza is educated, well experienced, and may bring in the African American Vote. However, there is not much known about her political views besides she is Republican. It would be particularly difficult to predict how the South may react.

Romeny is very similar to McCain in political views. He also seems to be the one that gets along with McCain the best, and was running in second place to McCain the Republican Primaries. However, this does not help McCain receive more votes, because he is so similar to McCain.

Huckabee is also well experienced. He would bring in the Evangelical votes in the South. However, he and McCain do not seem to get along as well, therefore they would not look as unified.

I personally favor Huckabee as a running mate, but each to their own, I suppose.

It is hard to be a first born.

On FOX news yesterday, they reported a study that proves that the first born child has it harder than his/ her siblings.

Don't know if it is really true. I have felt it always has been, but my father insists there are advantages to being the eldest.

Go check it out and see what you think.

Feed The Pig

As I watch television, late at night, I see a public service announcement on saving money.

Even though not everyone is a saver, saving money is important.
I have been given the advice to save for least two months of living expenses; six if you are in the construction business.

Even in the Great Depression, those who had saved and diversified their savings did somewhat okay during that time.

Currently we are in a recession. There have been whispers of another depression, however those comments are hushed. People do not wish to create panic. Nevertheless, it is necessary to prepare. It would be foolish not to prepare.

It is worth you time to check out the site: Feedthepig.org

Best wishes and be well!

Love

This post goes in a different direction than most of my posts.

It is important to take care of those you love.
It is important to not take them granted.
When you do, you loose those people.

Try to always find out something new about those you love.

Take care all!

Routine

Routine is important.

Routine keeps us stable.
Routine makes you a better survivalist, because it keeps you healthy and ready to battle anything that comes you way.

When I say routine, I mean a good routine.
One with good food, exercise, and learning new things.
Not only is good food good for you, but it usually cheaper. (as long you buy in season food.)

To start any routine, you need to take it step by step.
With food, start with eating at least one vegetable (a good green vegetable) with each meal.
Do not drink soft drink with your meals. They tell the body to store food instead of processing which causes weight gain.

With exercise, walk more often. Start out with a five minute walk, and increase it a minute each day.

Routine is good, as it is good routine.

Enjoy and stay well!

The Forgotten Survivalist.

In the history of mankind, we use to be survivalists.
We use to know how to skin a rabbit, tie knots, shoot our food, and other forms of communication.
However with technology, we have forgotten the simple things.
We are bound to technology.
If electricity goes out, we feel so helpless and cut off from the world.
I know we can use generators, but many do not have one.

We need to learn basics again.
We need to tie knots, make fires, make shelters, to be creative and make stories without television.

My advices to all, if it is beautiful outside, today, go enjoy it. Fly a kite; go shooting at your local shooting range, or even maybe do some yard work. The fresh air is good for you, and makes you a better survivalist.

Freedom II

Our development structure is quite different than many other countries.
We believe in the individual right should triumph over the collective.
Many countries do not.
They believe the collective right should triumph over the individual.
Those who live in the collective environment do not tend to even think about the possibility of individual right. Of course that is due to the fact those who do speak out are typically scorned.

Currently it is the collective right that seems to be gradually winning.
We make laws that protect the collective. However, many of a time, it takes away from the individual.

On the side note, I would like to mention: IT IS THE SECOND ADMENDMENT THAT PROTECTS THE FIRST! Do not forget this.

Enjoy, and be well.

Freedom

The Freedom we know today is different from the Freedom in the time of our parents, our parents' parents, so forth going back.
It can be said some rights have been gained.
However, it can also be said some rights have been lost.
The question becomes the collective versus the individual.

Growing up most people just accept "the way things are."
They do not question the rules, regulations, and laws.
Yet these are the same people, when new rules are put into place, they are angry, but their children just sees it as "the way things are."

Needless to say there will be more rules, more laws.
Every time some one messes up, there will be a regulation passes, so it doesn't happen again. Soon enough no one can do anything.

What perturbs me the most is people are putting chips into their pets.
Pets are animals. I do not think anyone will disagree; however, when there is talk of doing it to children, and to all people. That is just disturbing. What is more disturbing is that there are people are actually in favor of it. Your privacy doesn't matter. You will have no freedom whatsoever. But some people say that is the way to go. That way we can protect everyone. People claim, if you have nothing to hide, then it will not matter.

Does it matter to you? Do you want someone always looking over your shoulder?

When George Orwell wrote 1984, he was not too far from the the mark. He predicted we would be watched all the time. We would be told what to, when to do it, and how to do it.

Is the future we want?

Sewing for Survival

Sewing is a useful tool.
It does not take much effort to learn how to.
It does effort to make it graceful.

It can be used to seal wounds, med clothing/ any cloth-like material, make clothing, decorating (needlepoint and what not), and much more.

On a more serious note, it is extremely good in case of survival. You will not be able to buy new clothes when you need it, so you will have to do with what you have.
Worst come to worst, one can sew together two pieces or more of clothes to make a new piece of clothing.

One sidenote: if you bed sheets is getting that thinning hole in the middle, you can cut the sheet in half and sew together the good edges in the middle. (you would do it as if you were trying to make a seem for clothing) Put the good side up. (where you can not see the stitching)
People typically will not see your bed sheets. So it is a good way to save money. It is particually good for children's bed sheets that usually wear quicker.

Cavemen

It annoys me endlessly that people keep doing stupid things with guns.
This will cause more gun control, because people will see that is the only way to deal with it.

I disagree! (obviously)

A person should be able to defend themselves. Just because all guns are taken away does not mean people can not build them. It does not mean other things maybe can be used a weapons.
Even pencils can be used as weapons. Are they going to give us rubber pencils?

I see it as if you have some Cavemen. Someone kills another cavemen with a spear. Then all the spears get taken away. Then how does the other cavemen protect themselves when just about any cavemen can make a spear?

Key Maps

Key Maps are useful.
Even though streets keep changing, they mostly stay the same.
The great thing about Key Maps is they are not limited to the map you print out online.
Furthermore, they are not like GPS's which are dependent on electricity (which if you do not have, you can not use it.) (Which means it is also EMP proof.)
Key Maps lists all the streets so there is less confusion when it comes to streets that are named the same.

The Six Rules

I am currently reading 1984 by George Orwell. He died in 1950. It has been about six years since I last read 1984. I find it more enlightening now, than I did before.

What particularly stood out to me is how it truly relates to current issues, such as the idea of the collective versus the individual. In the book they have monitors which can watch the people any moment. Their lives are basically dictated for them.

The idea of the collective versus the individual has to do with rights. Do you take individual rights away from everyone to protect the collective, or do you just punish an individual. It is similar to a child misbehaving in at recess, and teacher not letting any of the students go to recess based upon the fact the one child misbehaved.

This leads to more relevant issues, such as control, do you take away everyone's guns to prevent people from killing others. Furthermore, do you take everyone's cars, because those are capable to kill people, too?

George Orwell had six rules for writing which he published in his book Politics and the English Language.

His six rules were:

Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.

Never use a long word where a short one will do.

If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

Never use the passive voice where you can use the active.

Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.

Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.
